Guitar Picks

OK I had totally intended to wait until tomorrow when I had this in my hot little hands but I can't wait cause it is so super cool ...

So yes the pennies are awesome ... but we need more SWAPS to take with us ... I mean you really can't have too many can you?? At one point I had looked ta custom guitar picks ... you know Rock the Mall ... guitar pick ... they totally go together if you ask me ... but that didn't pan out ... we had spent our budget already ...

So the other night I started searching for bulk guitar picks with the intention of putting them in the little baggies with a Rock The Mall note ... they all seemed to be more expensive than I wanted to invest since we weren't really going to use them to play ...

While searching I came across this blog post from Craft Test Dummies ...

http://www.crafttestdummies.com/craft-product-reviews/video-review-guitar-pick-punch/

Watch her video ... it is awesome ...

Can you believe it ... a punch to make REAL guitar picks ... how cool is that ... and since my husband has 6 guitars and counting I knew I could get him on board with getting this and helping me make guitar picks because after Rock The Mall he will use it to make his own cool picks ... I am sure I will come up with all sorts of things to use it for ...

So I started searching for how I could get one as fast as possible - seeing as we are quickly approaching Rock The Mall ... they are sold at Urban Outfitters but unfortunately the one in Georgetown is sold out (of course cause it is so cool) ... lots of different sites carry them but I decided to go to PickPunch.com ... seek out the guy who invented it and sells it ...

Well Von is amazing ... first of all he answers email in the middle of the night like me ... gotta love that in someone ... especially when you are working to get something before the weekend ... and he rocked everything and will be getting it to me by tomorrow ... TOMORROW people which means we have the weekend to work on them ...

So then I started wondering how I could get lots of plastic cards to punch ... and decided to stop by my favorite Starbucks this morning ... because I'll use any excuse to get a coffee ... well they throw away gift cards that are phased out or are holiday ones after the holidays and guess what ... they are handing them over to me ... now rather than make more trash we are recycling them into something AWESOME ...

So as soon as I get it tomorrow I'll post all about it ... so so so excited ... and can not thank Von enough for being so amazingly awesome ... if you are even thinking of getting one of these PLEASE go to PickPunch.com ... and let Von know how awesome he is!!!

How It Started

So while trying to come up with our SWAPS for Rock The Mall I came across the following information on some random site:

A Penny And The Girl Scout Story:

"Lincoln symbolizes the ideal we have towards our country as Girl Scouts.
The inscription, 'In God We Trust' reminds us of a Supreme Being. The Lincoln Memorial symbolizes what we are working towards as Girl Scouts...

Building strong citizens, thus forming a strong structure. The three steps
represent the three parts of the Girl Scout promise.

The ten columns remind us of the Girl Scout Law. The Promise and the Law support Girl Scouting. The open door symbolizes our open hearts to all.

The Latin 'E. Pluribus Unum' reminds us that while there are many of us here, we are all united in Girl Scouting.

This penny symbolizes the many rewards we receive during our lifetime. Rewards not in money or gifts, but in a smile of a friend, a handshake of a new friend and the knowledge and pride gained in doing the best you can in reaching your life's goal. Keep this penny...every once in a while look at it and remember what it means."

So at first we thought we could collect a ton of pennies and drill a hole in them ... add this info on a tag ... pop in a safety pin and woohoooooo we have our Rock The Mall SWAPS ...

But then someone some link on a site led me to custom squished pennies ... there used to be a squished penny museum in DC and I looked to see if it was still around hoping they would let us use their machine ...

If time allows I may still make a tag with the above info our our pennies ... but they do have this web address on them and if people are so inclined they can read all about it right here ...

SWAPS Bags

With Rock The Mall coming up and the massive amounts of SWAPS we are taking and getting I wanted the girls to have a bag they could wear across their bodies ... would have 2 pockets for giving and receiving and would be super easy to get in and out of ...

Skye tried a purse at Thinking Day this year but having to lift the flap up constantly just didn't work well for grabbing ones to give away or putting the ones she got from others into the bag ... so I had to come up with something different that didn't cost a lot ...

I looked at lots of different sites ... shared links with my friend Rachel (also a troop leader) who is looking for bags as well ... and just wasn't coming up with anything ...

So I came across the ones below and sent the link to Rachel to check out ... http://cheaptotes.com/new_promo_tote.html

The description talked about long handles and from the photo I thought they would be long enough for the girls to wear across their chest ... so I ordered a bunch in all different colors so I could check them out and to make the shipping worth while ...

They took FOREVER to arrive ... and once they did I realized they are a lot smaller than they look and the strap will not go across the chest ...

So I started messing around with them ... I cut one strap on the right and one on the left and tied them at the top ... it sits a little funny wearing it cross ways but it makes it very easy to reach in to the bag ...

Then I took some scrap fabric and made a pocket on the front ... perfect to put our SWAPS in and plenty of room then to put the SWAPS we get into the main part of the bag ...

Skye loves it and really that is what matters ... now I just need to make them for all the other girls going ... and cross my fingers that the hot glue I am using hold for at least the day!!

Extra SWAPS

My adorable niece asked me to help her finish up the SWAPS from her troop which of course I jumped on the opportunity to make more ... and then I decided that my niece and daughter needed some more of their own SWAPS to hand out ... her troop did do some really cute one ... the cookie box ... they did a Washington Monument with a 1/2 crayon in side to keep the shape ... a glass rock that they colored (get it ROCK the Mall) ...

So I purchased purple bottle caps for E. and pink bottle caps for Skye ... then printed up their own images for each ...

Before we got together I glued all the pin back to the bottle caps so they were ready to go ...

And then the girls put the stickers on each one with a resin sticker topper and voila ... a whole bunch of SWAPS to call their own ...

Super fun and super easy to make and they came out great ... and now both girls have piles of SWAPS to take to Rock the Mall ... we all can hardly wait ... let the SWAPSing begin!!

Rock The Mall SWAPS

So as I started thinking about Rock The Mall I focused a lot on what our troop would do for our SWAPS ... I wanted the girls to have a ton of them but at the same time we were running short on time so it had to be something that wasn't too time consuming to make ...

I thought about doing license plates ... getting custom guitar picks (get it rock the mall) ... searched the web for ideas and just wasn't coming up with something that was AWESOME ...

I started thinking about doing something with a penny because I saw some cool site that talked about the images on the penny relating to Girl Scouts and the Girl Scout Law ... we drilled holes in pennies and they were pretty cool ... but not quite cool enough ...

Somehow ... and I am not sure how - probably searching for the info on the penny and Girl Scouting - I found sites about squished pennies and thought, "Wouldn't it be great if I could get some place in the area to let us use their machine to make them without having to pay the dollar per penny?'

Well in looking up locations for elongated pennies I found out that you can actually have them made ... with your own design ... and I went to work researching who does them ...

I emailed lots of different people and spoke with several and eventually picked James from http://www.coynedesigns.com/ ... he has been great to work with ... I sent him my design and he elaborated on it and made it fantastic ...

He started pressing the pennies this weekend and we should get our first batch soon ... so so so excited ... this is more than a SWAPS to trade at Rock The Mall ... it is a keepsake forever ... such a great way to commemorate such an important day ... but the big question is ... did I get enough?

Our Troop

The 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting also marked the first year for our troop. We are a Daisy troop in the Nation's Capital. The 21 girls in our troop this first year are a combination of Kindergartners and First graders.

When I called looking for troop information so my daughter could join Girl Scouting when she started kindergarten and found that there wasn't a troop at her school and if one was to form they would need a leader I volunteered before the sentence was even finished ... being a part of Girl Scouts was one of the greatest parts of my childhood and I wanted to make sure my daughter had the opportunity to embrace scouting like I did ...

And I must say ... it has been such an honor to be a troop leader this year ... I have enjoyed every moment of it and wish we could do even more together ... the group of girls and parents we have are so fantastic ... I catch myself looking around at this group of girls and thinking about how they will stay friends for years to come just like I am with girls from my troop ...

I am looking forward to being a troop leader for years to come ... it is all so much fun and not a single moment of it feels like work ... which for me means it is a sign it is something you are meant to do ...

Alright ...

Alright I think we are set with the design ... just waiting for an image for the header which I will have next week ... and with only 2 weeks until Rock the Mall (yea!!) I need to get some posts up ... they are all in my head just gotta get them on paper screen ...
